Administrative Assistant – Bear Creek Township Assessing Department

Bear Creek Township is accepting applications for a full-time Administrative Assistant in the Assessing Department. The Administrative Assistant will report to the Township Assessor and will assist with the day-to-day operation of the Assessing Department. This position will work with residents, property owners, real estate professionals, contractors, other governmental agencies, and Township staff to maintain accurate records and provide professional customer service.

Primary duties include:
Answering phones, assisting walk-in visitors, responding to emails, preparing mailings, scanning and filing documents, entering data, maintaining property records, assisting with forms and applications, and supporting the general operation of the Assessing Department. The position will also assist with assessing records, Property Transfer Affidavits, Principal Residence Exemptions, deeds, permits, sales verification, Board of Review preparation, and other assessment-related processes.

Occasional field work may be required to assist with property verification, permit review, or assessment record updates. Applicants should be comfortable performing field work, driving to properties, and learning the basic principles of Michigan property assessment administration.
Other administrative duties may be assigned as needed.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work professionally with the public, officials, staff, and other agencies.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Strong computer and data entry skills, especially with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to learn software, systems, and procedures.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Michigan Certified Assessing Technician certification is not required at the time of hire, but the selected candidate will be required to obtain MCAT certification within 6 months of hiring.
 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in a municipal office, assessing office, real estate office, building department, or similar administrative setting.
  • Knowledge of Michigan property tax administration, deeds, Property Transfer Affidavits, Principal Residence Exemptions, or property records.
  • Experience with BS&A, Apex, GIS, Microsoft Office, and similar software.
  • Candidates who currently possess MCAT or MCAO certification, or who have prior municipal assessing experience, are encouraged to apply.

Compensation and benefits:

Hourly wage range is $22.00 to $25.00 per hour, depending on licensure, experience, and qualifications.
Benefits include up to 6% matching retirement, health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, AFLAC supplemental insurance, HSA contribution, short-term disability insurance, paid holidays, and paid time off. Paid time off starts at two weeks and may increase up to four weeks based on Township policy.
