Job Title: Education Director
Location: Bay View Association, Petoskey, MI
Reports To: Executive Director
Employment Type: Contract (Exempt, No Benefits)
Salary: Starting at $30,000 annually (bi-weekly payments, 26 per year)
Schedule:

  • September–May: Flexible schedule
  • Mid-June–August: Full-time, on-site presence required at least 5 days before Assembly Season begins. Housing is not provided.
Organization Overview
The Bay View Association (BVA) is a National Historic Landmark and an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering Chautauqua-style programming in Performing Arts, Worship & Religious Life, Education, and Recreation. The Bay View community includes 444 Victorian cottages, 2 inns, 30 historic buildings, and 900 members along the shores of Lake Michigan.
 
Position Summary
The Education Director is responsible for developing, coordinating, and managing all aspects of Bay View’s educational programming. This includes working with other program directors, volunteers, instructors, donors, and staff to plan and execute a variety of classes, lectures, and special events, particularly during the summer Assembly Season. The Education Director is a key leader in ensuring the educational mission of the Association is fulfilled with excellence and alignment to its core values.
 
Key Responsibilities
Assembly Season (Mid-June to August)
  • Implement and oversee execution of all classes, lectures, and special events
  • Supervise technical support (sound/AV) for lectures and classes
  • Track and manage furniture, equipment, and supplies in Loud Hall
  • Promote the education program internally and externally with assistance from the Director of Communications and Donor Relations
  • Submit instructor payments and reimbursement requests on time
  • Monitor and report attendance, revenue, and budget vs. actuals
  • Manage class cancellations and schedule changes
  • Maintain communication with the Director of Communications & Donor Relations regarding program needs and fundraising
  • Meet regularly and collaborate with other Program Directors and Executive Director
     
Off-Season (September to May)
  • Collaborate with the Education Committee, Executive Director, and other program directors to select classes, speakers, and special events
  • Develop and maintain a master schedule, avoiding conflicts with other Bay View programming
  • Write promotional and biographical content for instructors and lecturers
  • Provide content to update the Education section of the Bay View website
  • Coordinate hospitality and logistics for visiting speakers
  • Work with team of volunteers to plan and schedule Monday night movies and other educational series
  • Support inter-program collaboration across Chautauqua disciplines
  • Maintain year-round communication with instructors and donors
General
  • Prepare the annual operating budget and class fee structure in collaboration with the Finance Director
  • Provide class and instructor data for online registration and print publications
  • Recommend instructor compensation and minimum enrollment numbers
Qualifications
Required
  • Ability to analyze and identify high-quality speakers on timely, relevant topics, with the goal of fostering civil discourse on issues of public interest and viewpoint diversity
  • Excellent public speaking and writing skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience managing volunteers and working with diverse stakeholders
  • Strong customer service and public relations orientation
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Preferred
  • Familiarity with Bay View Association and its Chautauqua programming
  • Experience managing educational programs and events
  • Skills in budget development and financial analysis
  • Background in contract administration and instructor management
  • Experience developing promotional content and materials
